How to size a mining truck fleet: a decision framework.

Fleet size is not simply production divided by payload. Cycle time, availability, utilization, loading balance and operating variability change the answer.

01 / DEFINE OUTPUT

Start with the production requirement.

Clarify material, target tonnes by period, working calendar, shifts, planned stops and the difference between average and peak demand.

Break the cycle into observable parts.

Loading, loaded travel, dumping, empty return, queueing and delays should be estimated from site evidence and tested against variability.

Availability and utilization are not interchangeable.

Mechanical availability describes readiness; utilization describes productive use when available. Both require project-specific definitions and records.

Balance trucks with loading, roads and dumping.

A theoretical fleet count can fail if loaders, intersections, dumping capacity, road condition, refuelling or maintenance resources become bottlenecks.
